Congratulations! You have reached full term and are probably feeling as big as a house! You are getting impatient to meet your baby, but he seems perfectly happy where he is and shows no signs of making his grand entrance. It is around this time when you might start looking for ways to bring on labour. Here are some tips that might just do that!
- Certain foods such as pineapple, ginger or spicy dishes may actually contain enzymes that help to ripen the cervix – despite it seeming like an old wives tale!
- Sex – This is one you have probably heard about before. Sex can help bring on labour in two ways. Sperm contains a chemical called prostaglandin that helps to soften the cervix, while the physical act of having sex can encourage contractions.
- Evening Primrose Oil – you can swallow the capsule or if you are feeling particularly nimble, break the capsule and extract the oil. You then rub the oil directly onto your cervix to help it thin out. It is important to speak with your midwife beforehand and avoid direct contact with your cervix if you have had problems during pregnancy.
- Nipple stimulation can also help to bring on labour. It causes the release of oxytocin – a hormone that brings on contractions. Don’t overdo it though, your nipples will get enough stimulation after baby is born!
